the Great Mountain (1,012 m). The west side is steep, with many extensive sandy beaches. There are also plateaus, fertile valleys and gorges with lush vegetation. The flora is remarkable including olives, cypresses, pines, a special variety of oak, herbs and rare flowers.
The island has several sources, including the famous source of the Kerasias Syvros, streams of which some are impetuous forming small waterfalls like the one in Dimosari near Nidri and impressive gorges like those of the Bee in Sfakiotes and Haradiatika.
The two lagoons in the north of the island are important wetlands for many bird species
The sea dismemberment of Lefkada is rich. It consists of impressive beaches, peninsulas, capes – prominently Lefkatas Cape - bays which are natural ports such as Vlicho, Sivota and Rouda on the east of Lefkada and Vasiliki on the south side.

Lefkada is the only island in Greece to which you may travel by car! No expenses for a ferry boat ride! There is a short bridge connecting the mainland with Lefkada.
The undersea tunnel of Preveza-Aktion makes the access to the island from northwest Greece and the port of Igoumenitsa (102 km) a very pleasant and easy trip. The new impressive Rio-Antirrio Bridge connects Patras (170 km) with the rest of Central & Northern Greece and the island of Lefkada.
From Athens there are daily flights connecting Aktion International Airport, which is just 18 km outside the town of Lefkada during the summer months. There are also 2 weekly flights from Thessaloniki. Intermediate stops are the islands of Corfu, Cephalonia and Zakynthos. Weekly flights also from Crete (Sitia) and from April to October there are direct flights from different parts of Europe.
From the villages of Nydri and Vasiliki there are daily trips by ferry boat to Meganisi island, Cephalonia (Fiskardo) and Ithaki (Frikes). Also there are boats (excursions) visiting the surrounding small (must see) islands and picturesque beaches.
